Taking a dip in the bone-chilling waters at Westport's Compo Beach is without a doubt a cool way to start the New Year. And that's exactly what dozens of daring men, women and children did Saturday morning.
Although going for a swim at the beach on the first day of January might seem totally insane, the New Year's Day plungers braved the chilly water for good causes: Participants raised money for organizations of their choosing. Some organizations that benefited from the Polar Bear Plunge included Westport's Save the Childre n and the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network .
And though the swimmers were greeted with sunny skies and air temperatures in the 40s, it certainly wasn't a typical day at the beach with water temperatures near 40.
