Felicia and Chris Lindau and their two sons joined other Westporters in heading over to the Frosty Bear Ice Cream gazebo Saturday to exchange canned goods for ice cream during the Cones for Cans food drive.
Organized by Jim Martin and his family, owners of Frosty Bear, all canned and other nonperishable food items collected went to help fill the food pantry at Homes with Hope's Gillespie Center/ Hoskins' Place, an emergency homeless shelter for men and women.
"We're always in need [of food], especially during the holidays," said Jeff Wieser, president and CEO of Homes with Hope . "We're well stocked for now, but it's amazing how quickly it disappears. So we're thankful for any donations we get, especially to Jim Martin and his family for hosting this special event."
Wieser said 76 people received a free ice cream cone by bringing in at least one canned good or nonperishable food item.
"I'm told someone even came by with an SUV full of food," he said. "We're all really happy with [the turnout]: it was a good day."
