REDDING, Conn. -- The Friends and Neighbors of Putnam Park will celebrate the 235th anniversary of the Revolutionary War encampments at Redding this weekend.

The event is from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Putnam Memorial State Park at routes 58 and 107.

At Saturday's event, there will be artillery and drill demonstrations, a battlefield skirmish, Colonial craftsmanship, kids' drill instruction and examples of Army camp life at the time.

The park is located on the site of the Winter Encampment of General Israel Putnam's Continental troops from December 1778 to May 1779. The park is dedicated to the role they played in the Revolutionary War in helping secure America's independence.

More than 3000 men were sent into winter quarters spread throughout three camps in Redding. The camps were established to keep an eye on the storehouses in Danbury and to protect Long Island Sound and the Hudson River Valley. Many of these men were the same who had suffered at Valley Forge the previous winter.

The Friends & Neighbors of Putnam Park is a not-for-profit group whose mission is to help maintain and promote the historical, educational and recreational values of Putnam Memorial State Park.

The group is comprised of people who have an appreciation for "this historical jewel in our midst." Its purpose is to help ensure Putnam Park is preserved for future generations, as well as to promote its unique heritage to the community today.
