WESTPORT, Conn. Don't worry about a little rain ruining the fourth annual Blues, Views and BBQ festival in Westport this weekend. The three-day food, music and entertainment event will prevail, rain or shine.
Organized by the Westport Downtown Merchants Association and the Levitt Pavilion, this family-friendly festival kicks off Friday night at 8 p.m. with a concert by Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, a New Jersey rhythm and blues band. Originally planned for the Levitt Pavilion, the concert is being moved indoors to the Saugatuck Elementary School auditorium, 170 Riverside Ave.
If you don't already have a ticket for the concert, some will be available at the door for purchase. Tickets are $40 for adults and $30 for students and seniors with identification. Kids 5 and under are free. Proceeds from the concert will help underwrite free summer programming at the Levitt. Doors open at 7 p.m.
The festival continues Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Westport Public Library parking lot and Levitt Pavilion. Some of the day's highlights include the Kansas City BBQ Society-sanctioned "Cookin' for a Cause" amateur cook-off, in which teams of two to four backyard chefs compete in four categories: chicken, ribs, chef's choice and dessert. This competition benefits the Westport Woman's Club Food Closet.
On Sunday, the third and final day, the festival runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and features a special "Kid's Q" competition. During this cook-off, teams of two to four kid chefs, with adult supervision, show off their culinary skills in three BBQ categories: burger, hot dog and chef's choice.
Both Saturday and Sunday will also feature a variety of live music, an activity tent for kids sponsored by Melissa and Doug, and of course, foodlots of food. Participants can look forward to sampling food from Westport's own Bobby Q's Bodacious BBQ and Michele's Pies, as well as food from Winnie's Jerk Chicken & Fish and Dave & Jerry's Hot Dog Trolley.
Three-day festival passes and tickets are on sale online at the Levitt Pavilion website and by phone at 866-973-9612 (ext. 3).
