Music Fills Weekend in Westport

WESTPORT, Conn. – Haven’t made plans for the weekend yet? Here’s a collection of some of the many events happening in and around Westport over the next three days:

Friday, Jan. 20

? 4 to 5 p.m.: Let your kids flex their building skills with Lego in the Library . Kids in grades K through 6 can use the Fairfield Woods Branch Library’s massive collection of the toy blocks to build whatever they want. Parents must stay with their kids throughout the program. The event take place each Friday afternoon in the children’s room of the library, located at 1147 Fairfield Woods Road.

? 7 to 10 p.m.: Teen music fans won’t want to miss out as four bands take the stage at Two Boots Pizza, 281 Fairfield Ave., Bridgeport, for a Battle of the Bands, presented by the Westport Youth Film Festival. Watch as Chillingsworth, Borrowed Glory, Cheeky and Clay Garner compete for the chance to perform during the Film Festival in June. Tickets are $10. ? 8 p.m.: Celebrated for its innovation, creativity and preservation of predominantly African-American traditions in dance, the Philadelphia Dance Company, known as PHILADANCO, performs at Fairfield University’s Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts . Tickets are $35-$45.

Saturday, Jan. 21

? 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Celebrate winter at Earthplace, Westport’s nature discovery center, with specially designed winter activities. Make Inuit snow goggles, crystal snowflakes, snowflake catchers and even ice sculptures. Or enjoy a hike with Earthplace naturalist Miss Becky at noon, a bonfire with hot chocolate and s’mores at 1 p.m. and a drum dance circle at 2:30 p.m. The activities will take place snow or no snow and cost $20 per family. ? 1 to 3 p.m.: Did you know the Discovery Museum turns 50 this year? The learning center and planetarium on the Bridgeport-Fairfield border will kick off its golden anniversary celebration with a reception. You can also check out two current exhibits: “Contraptions A to Z,” featuring interactive tools and toys, and “First in Flight,” celebrating Bridgeport’s contributions to aviation. ? All day: Join Westport-based environmental group Green Village Initiative for its first annual Winter Fest celebration at Christ & Holy Trinity Church, 75 Church Lane, Westport. Tickets are $75 and include a light dinner, bar and live music. For more information, visit GVI online .

Sunday, Jan. 22

? 3 to 7 p.m.: Fairfield state Rep. Tony Hwang will celebrate the Chinese New Year at Ten Asian Bistro, located in the Westfield Mall, 5065 Main St., Trumbull. Along with the restaurant’s grand opening, the event will feature traditional entertainment, such as acrobatic dancing. Donations will also be collected for the Swim Across the Sound.

? 4 p.m.: Unwind with an intimate performance by the Stamford Symphony in Westport during the Mozart & Friends Recital . The recital will be at the Steinway Piano Gallery, 501 Post Road E. To buy recital tickets contact Stamford Symphony Patron Services: at 203-325-1407, Ext. 10.

? 5 to 6 p.m.: Christ & Holy Trinity Church in Westport is hosting a Choral Evensong and Organ Recital. The event will feature songs sung by combined adult and high school choirs and organ music by guest recitalist Michael Messina, director of music at Trinity Church in Indianapolis and a graduate of the Eastman School of Music. The event is free, but donations are accepted.
