First Church Congregational will host a memorial service Saturday for Fairfield's James W. Boston, who died in August. Boston was a dedicated volunteer who helped a range of residents, serving as the first director of the Fairfield Teen Center and later as director of the Senior Center.
"Jim Boston was one of the most wonderful men I have ever met. He was wise, kind to everyone and loved by all," Claire Grace, the senior center's director, said via email shortly after Boston's death. "Jim's passing was a terrible loss to us."
A Pittsburgh native, Boston earned his degree in education and performance from Carnegie Institute of Technology and went on to receive a master's in education from the University of Bridgeport. For 35 years, he worked as a music teacher at Westport's Coleytown Middle School until retiring in 2000.
Along with his work for the teen center and senior center, Boston organized youth programs for First Congregational and Silver Lake Conference Center. And even after his time as director, Boston continued in retirement to drive the senior center's bus.
The memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at First Congregational Church, at Beach Road and the Old Post Road. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jim's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital , 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or by calling 1-800-805-5856.
