WESTON, Conn. -- Steven Kos, an aspiring doctor, is in his third summer working as a lifeguard at Bisceglie Pond.
"Lifeguarding was an opportunity to get into the medical field," said Kos, who graduated from American University in 2010 with a degree in biochemistry. Kos was an EMT prior to becoming a lifeguard and plans to renew his certification.
This summer, he is working at the pond one day a week and spending the rest of his time working part-time at St. Vincent's Hospital. Kos minored in French at American University, and is now fluent.
"My goal is to become a doctor. I always liked knowing the ways things worked. I really wanted to know CPR, just for my own use," said Kos. "My grandpa died when I was young and I never understood why."
Kos has considered pediatrics because he likes working with kids, like the ones at Bisceglie Pond. He first began lifeguarding at the Westport Weston Family Y. As a kid, he would come to Bisceglie Pond. He learned how to swim at Weston Middle School, where he is also a lifeguard.
