WESTON, Conn. Ben O'Brien watched last week as a young girl pulled her younger sister around in Bisceglie Pond. He also watched as she dropped her. O'Brien immediately jumped off his lifeguard stand and pulled her from the water to safety.
O'Brien has been a lifeguard in Weston for two years. "I like being outside and watching kids enjoying themselves," he said. "Weston doesn't have many recreational thingsI think this is nice."
The 19-year-old college junior was taught how to swim at a young age by Lynn Stevens, who is now his supervisor. "I've always loved the water and I'm a strong swimmer," he said.
O'Brien studies business at Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania and also plays on the school's Division 3 football team. He played football and lacrosse all four years at Weston High School and earned an academic award for holding a 3.0 GPA.
The pond has been a great place to cool off during the heat wave, O'Brien said. "I try to go in the pond before I sit on the stand," he said.
After college, O'Brien hopes to work in sports marketing or advertising. In his free time, he rides dirt bikes, ATVs and jetskis.
