WESTPORT, Conn. The following letter was submitted by Westport resident Mike Kirby.
I support Jen Tooker for the Westport Board of Education. I have known Jen for 14 years and consider her a true friend and someone I admire; someone that can strike a balance between family, friends, faith, civic duty and a successful career.
I also know Jen as a leader and successful international businesswomen who has managed large teams and budgets across multiple countries.
We need leaders with a world view, leaders who have managed complexity in good times and in bad, leaders who have managed large numbers of people and budgets and leaders who have experience making difficult decisions under pressure when all the facts arent and never will be available.
What does living and working overseas and managing a large team across multiple countries have to do with being a member of the Board of Education? The simple answer is everything, but not the obvious. In reality, it has little to do with broadening the cultural experiences of our students.
It has everything to do with experiencing success across multiple cultures, languages, rules and regulations and business practices. Its about bridging the divide between that which by its very nature is different. Its about unifying across boundaries, political or otherwise, to find new solutions to todays problems, not yesterdays solutions to yesterdays problems.
We need a leader who has experienced success by bringing people together, not splitting people apart. We need Jen Tooker on the Westport Board of Education.
