WESTPORT, Conn. The following letter was submitted by Westport resident Bob Makuch, a professor of Public Health at Yale University.
To the Editor:
I would like to endorse Tom Lasersohn for re-election to the Westport Board of Finance. As a professor of Public Health at Yale, a large part of my job is statistics. I know how important it is to get behind numbers, really understand how they were put together and appreciate how these numbers are translated into actions that affect our daily lives. Tom clearly has all the skills to do this. He is eminently qualified to dig beneath the surface, and fully understand the assumptions and implications underlying financial statements/projections.
Our sons are in school together, and I have gotten to know Tom and his family through years of soccer games, school events, backyard cookouts, and family dinners. Tom is deeply committed to disciplined and transparent financial management in Westport; and not because that is an end in itself, but rather, because he knows that is the only way we can afford to maintain and improve the special character of our town that makes it such a wonderful place to live. Finally, as a teacher, I understand the importance of educating our children exceptionally well. I am certain that Tom's BOF input will contribute significantly to enhancing the quality of our schools.
I am a registered Democrat, and I have never publically endorsed a candidate before, but it is rare to find a candidate with Tom's experience, competency, integrity and commitment. I am extremely confident that Tom will be a strong, insightful and steady hand on the BOF. I strongly urge Westport voters to vote for Tom Lasersohn no matter their party affiliation.
