Letter: Finkel Has Conflict of Interest in Weston

WESTON, Conn. — This letter was written by Melissa Koller, a member of the Weston Board of Finance, about the candidacy of David Finkel.

The verdict is in. Weston’s town attorney and our Board of Ethics have determined that David Finkel has a conflict of interest if he serves on the Finance Board, even if he gives back the money he has already received. Mr. Finkel has dismissed their findings as “a distraction that has been overblown.”

The Republican Party refuses to remove Finkel from the ballot. Instead, the Republican Town Committee has resorted to hurling absurd accusations of conflict at a Democratic candidate. But why sling “conflict” mud at another party? With its continued support of Finkel, the Republican Town Committee has now demonstrated to the people of Weston that it’s OK to ignore even a legally proven conflict of interest.

Finkel’s running mates assure us that we can “trust him.” I’ve never met Mr. Finkel — probably because he’s never attended one of our Board of Finance meetings. So I’m placing my trust in the town attorney and the Board of Ethics. And they tell us that Mr. Finkel has a conflict of interest, no matter how hard the Republicans attempt to cover it with smoke screens and mirrors.
