WESTPORT, Conn. The following letter was submitted by Westport resident Maureen Whiteman Zlatkin.
To the Editor:
I am writing to voice my support for Janis Collins, Board of Finance candidate. I have known Janis since our daughters, now at Staples, were in elementary school.
I first met Janis when she was PTA co-president, and I was inspired by the wonderful environment at Green's Farms School to become an involved parent and volunteer. We had a lot in common, as both of us had taken time as working parents with significant careers mine in law and hers in business to spend more time contributing to our communities and raising our children.
Something I learned from Janis during this time is how significantly the quality of experience in our schools and our town is affected by the serious involvement of talented and skilled volunteers, who bring professional levels of talent to their tasks.
As long as I've known her, I've been impressed with Janis' leadership skills, commitment, diplomacy and business acumen. Janis brought her business skills to the PTA, making sure that we were raising revenues to fund significant programs, and that our spending was in line with the budget. And, I was continually impressed by her dedication and her willingness to work hard and handle many different challenges and responsibilities. She has continued in this dedication to community leadership in her role as chairman of the Parks and Recreation Commission.
I have directly observed, and benefitted from, her ability to take a leadership role in communicating with constituents, and her emphasis that Westporters must stay well-informed on the issues our community faces.
Janis' education includes degrees in finance and quantitative methods. She has had extensive business experience as a partner at KPMG Consulting and a managing director at JPMorgan. What a boon to our community that she is willing to devote herself to the Board of Finance and to bring depth and professional knowledge in finance to the position.
And if an issue is controversial as we all know can be the case in our community Janis will not shy away from following her convictions to do the right thing, even when it's easier to back down. She is dedicated and committed to our community and works tirelessly on behalf of all of us.
We would be fortunate to have her expending that same intensity and applying her extensive financial and business knowledge as a member of Westport's Board of Finance. Please join me in voting for Janis Collins on Nov. 8.
