League Makes Strides to Fight Cancer

Taking a step toward finding a cure for breast cancer may be as simple as literally taking a few steps. The Weston Women's League is recruiting walkers to join Team Weston at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Westport's Sherwood Island State Park on Oct. 24. Debby Katz a well as Julie Baisley and her daughter Jordan will be leading the way for Weston.

"Breast cancer has directly affected many of our close family members and friends. We all worry about our mothers, wives, sisters, daughters and friends who may one day face this disease," Katz said in a statement. "We are hoping to recruit a large and diverse WALK team. We encourage everyone and anyone to participate—husbands, grandparents, children, co-workers and friends."

More than 200,000 women are diagnosed every year with breast cancer, the second leading cause of cancer death in women. Last year, nearly 700,000 participants nationwide walked for Making Strides, collecting $60 million to help the American Cancer Society, said Katz, who said this year's goal for Team Weston is to reach $5,000 in donations.
