Connecticut Audubon Society conservationist Anthony Zemba will lead Saturday’s hike through the Trout Brook Valley Conservation Area. Along the way, he will speak about the importance of the preserve’s many vernal pools.

Vernal pools, or “ephemeral wetlands,” are small, sometimes temporary ponds that collect throughout the Trout Brook Valley area. They are an important part of the area’s ecosystem, providing habitats for salamanders and other small amphibians. The Aspetuck Land Trust recently changed some of its policies at Trout Brook Valley to better preserve these pools and other areas, on the advice of Audubon conservationists.

“It’s our responsibility to manage and preserve Trout Brook Valley for future generations, and we now have a plan to do this based upon the scientific findings in this report.  Our next step is to better educate the public about this unique and important natural resource,” executive director David Brant said in a statement at the time.

Saturday’s hike will run from 1 to 3 p.m. The hike is free, but space is limited. To reserve your spot, email dbrant@aspetucklandtrust.org.

The Aspetuck Land Trust also has other educational hikes planned for May at its preserves around the area. There will be a tree-oriented hike through Haskins Preserve in Westport on May 4, a fly-fishing tour through Warner Anglers Preserve in Easton on May 18 and a trip emphasizing migratory birds through Trout Brook Valley on May 24.
