WESTPORT, Conn. John Harold Stewart of Westport died May 20 at home. He was 79.
A 36-year resident of Westport, Stewart was assistant treasurer of IBM before retiring.
Born in Kingston, N.Y., he was the son of Harold and Marie Stewart. He graduated from SUNY Maritime College and received an MBA from New York University. Stewart served with the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant from 1954 to 1957. He retired from the Navy Reserve in 1976 with the rank of captain.
Stewart worked his entire career with IBM, serving as assistant controller before retiring in 1995 as assistant treasurer. He served on the board of trustees of several organizations, including NYU Stern School of Business, Glucksman Ireland House of NYU, Financial Executive Institute, International Management and Development Institute and Institute of Internal Auditors.
He also served on the board of Search For Change Inc., where he was the founder of the vocational program. Beside his longtime residence in Westport, Stewart also had homes in Naples, Fla., and Schull in County Cork, Ireland.
Stewart is survived by his wife, Jeanne Fennell; three sons, Michael (Tammy) Stewart, John (Suzanne) Stewart and Sean Stewart; two daughters, Alaire (Joseph) Perazella and Keara Stewart; two sisters, Mary Lou McCardle and Kay Carpino, and three grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Colange.
A Mass was celebrated at St. Luke Church in Westport on Wednesday. Harding Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
