WESTPORT, Conn. Summer vacation will officially end Aug. 30 for most Westport school children, but the Westport Arts Center keeps the fun-momentum going during the school year by offering a variety of programs.
Open to kids ages 2 to 12, these art programs range from after-school and Saturday series to vacation-day workshops and "WACky Family Days." Last year, the arts center served about 4,000 school children, Education Director Danielle Ogden said. This year, the programs are expected to grow by 30 percent.
"[Westport Arts Center] has experienced a growing demand for our after-school art classes, and we are thrilled to be growing at such a fast rate," Ogden said in a statement. "We have had a large number of families ask for more advanced art programs for an older age group, and this expansion is due to our response to a need to provide arts experiences for children ages 10 to 12."
The art center's 2011-12 youth education programs will include four seven-week series programs, eight "Super Saturdays," three vacation-day workshops and two "WACky Family Days." A full listing of programs, with descriptions, is available on the arts center website .
The seven-week program series are offered in four sessions: The fall session runs from Sept. 19 to Oct. 31; the first winter session runs from Nov. 21 to Jan. 9; the second winter session runs Jan. 30 to March 19; and the spring session runs from April 9 to May 28.
Registration will begin Monday for members and Monday, Aug. 29, for nonmembers. And unlike in the past when registration was split into four seasons, parents now can register their child for the entire year at once.
