Helping Others Never Tasted So Good

Getting a free ice cream cone is sweet, but getting one and helping people in need is even sweeter. Thanks to John Martin and his family, owners of Frosty Bear Ice Cream in Westport, you can do both Saturday during the "Cones for Cans" food drive.

From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., anyone who brings at least one canned or non-perishable food item to the Frosty Bear gazebo at Christie's Country Store at 161 Cross Highway will receive a free ice cream cone. All donations will go to the food pantry at Homes with Hope's Gillespie Center/ Hoskins' Place, an emergency homeless shelter for men and women.

"We are grateful that Frosty Bear has chosen to end their successful season with an acknowledgement that not all Westport residents are as fortunate as others," said Jeff Wieser president and CEO of Homes with Hope . "The cans, cereal, pasta, etc. that are collected for the food pantry go immediately to help people in real need and in real hunger. As we start the holiday season, the need only intensifies, so we appreciate the Martin family bringing this awareness to the fore and helping us stock the pantry."

Not only is the "Cones for Cans" event a food drive, it's a celebration to mark the end of Frosty Bear's first year of operation at Christie's.

"For us, this is a way to thank the community for making our first year such a success," said Martin. "We are already looking forward to next year and hope we can, in the meantime, help alleviate the situation for those who are struggling in these difficult economic times."

Current forecasts predict beautiful weather for Saturday, but just in case, a rain date has been set for Sunday at the same time. And while you only have to bring one canned or non-perishable food drive, more is certainly encouraged.
