WESTON, Conn. Harry Potter and the books' cast of characters are casting a magical spell across Fairfield County in advance of Thursday's midnight release of the eighth and final movie, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2." Weston is no exception.
"People are taking out Harry Potter books and movies. All of the movies are checked out and a good number of the books, too," Weston Library Director Karen Tatarka said Friday.
That's what librarians across Fairfield County are saying about the popular series by J.K Rowling. New Canaan Library Executive Director Alice Knapp said all the Harry Potter material was off the shelves Friday. When she later found an audiobook in the children's section that had just been returned, it was checked right out again.
"If one is here, it just goes back out," Knapp said. "People are getting ready for the last movie. Both the staff and (visitors) are talking about it."
Teen Allison Remmell, who was volunteering in the summer reading program at the Easton Public Library, said Friday that many kids have been checking out the Harry Potter books. Allison is caught up in the excitement, too: She said she's planning to dress up in Harry garb for the last film.
"I like it because it's really suspenseful," she said. "I read all of the books. I'm really excited for the movie." Allison said she and a friend already have robes but are unsure what else they will add to their costumes.
Abby Thompson, 10, of nearby Fairfield, loves Harry Potter so much she's trying to talk her mother into taking her to Wednesday's midnight release, too. But her mom, Michelle Thompson said that although she has put up with Abby's "Harry obsession," going to a midnight show is where she draws the line.
"I'll take her the next day, but I'm not going at midnight, with long lines and getting out at 3 in the morning," Michelle Thompson said. Abby frowned, as only a Muggle can. (A Muggle is the series' term for a nonmagical person.)
Abby said her favorite character is Harry's friend, Hermione Granger. "I like how she doesn't let Harry and Ron (who rounds out the close-knit trio) boss her around," said Abby. "She's so smart, and I love when she uses her magic wand."
