Westport, Conn. -- Happy Birthday To Westport’s Annie Leibovitz!
Anna-Lou "Annie" Leibovitz, who has owned a home in Westport, turns 64 on Wednesday. Leibovitz, born October 2, 1949 in Waterbury, is an American portrait photographer.
She completed her studies in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute & started her career as staff photographer with Rolling Stone magazine. Her new style of lighting and use of bold colors and poses got her a position with Vanity Fair magazine. She was received a Clio Award in 1987.
She was the second living portraitist and first woman to mount an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in 1991.
A major retrospective of her work was held at the Brooklyn Museum, Oct. 2006 – Jan. 2007, based on her book, “Annie Leibovitz: A Photographer's Life, 1990–2005” which was expanded to include three of the official portraits of Queen Elizabeth II.
She was awarded The Royal Photographic Society's Centenary Medal and Honorary Fellowship in recognition of a sustained, significant contribution to the art of photography in 2009.
