Daniel Irvin "Dan" Rather Jr., who has owned a home in Easton, turns 83 on Friday. The journalist and the former news anchor was born Oct. 31, 1931, in Wharton County, Texas.

Rather began his journalism career in 1950 as an Associated Press reporter in Huntsville, Texas and later, he was a reporter for United Press from 1950 to 1958.

He began his television career as a reporter for KTRK-TV, the ABC affiliate in Houston and was subsequently promoted to the director of news for KHOU-TV, the CBS affiliate in Houston.

He was anchor of the "CBS Evening News" for 24 years, from March 9, 1981, to March 9, 2005. He also contributed to CBS's "60 Minutes" and left the network after 43 years in 2006.

He has received numerous Emmy Awards, several Peabody Awards, and various honorary degrees from universities for his lifetime contributions to journalism. He is now managing editor and anchor of the television news magazine "Dan Rather Reports" on the cable channel AXS TV.
