WESTPORT, Conn. Thousands of people camped out at Compo Beach on Friday night for the annual Westport Police Athletic League fireworks display. Though the fireworks didn't start popping until 9:15 p.m., many, including Richard Marconi and his family, arrived hours earlier to enjoy dinner on the beach.
"It's not just about the fireworks, it's about the atmosphere," said Marconi, who arrived at Compo at about 6:30 p.m. to secure a spot on the beach. "The whole town comes together for this it's like a giant beach party. And you see so many people you know. It's a fantastic event."
Set off from a barge on the water, the fireworks display lasted about 25 minutes.
