Financier Embraces Family Feel of Investment Firm

Jonathan Hurwitz had a simple desire when it came to his career: He didn’t want to spend all of his time behind the wheel of a car. So when Hurwitz had the opportunity to take a management position with David Lerner Associates in Westport, he left Long Island.

“When I worked in the Long Island office I had several hundred clients, but I was ready for a change,” said Hurwitz. That change came with the offer to take over as the branch manager while the company was located in Darien. He made the 100-mile roundtrip daily for a while. But when the company relocated to Westport, so did he.

He and wife Catherine are self-described empty-nesters, a feeling he has grown to appreciate. “I forgot what it is like not having to share the whole house with the kids,” said Hurwitz.

Though he may have reclaimed his kitchen and bathroom from his kids, Hurwitz shares the company with his son Matthew. Hurwitz brought him into David Lerner Associates five years ago, and his progeny still works in the Long Island office.

Hurwitz said having his son work at the same company is an outgrowth of his own confidence in how David Lerner treats his employees and clients. The term family is used often inside the office walls.

Hurwitz admits it is challenging to inspire new clients to invest. Markets have been volatile, and many stable investments don’t offer significant returns. Many clients are looking at their investments as income opportunities and can’t afford to take risks.  The firm understands this.

“If a new client wants the hot stock of the day, this is just not where he should go to fit in,” said Hurwitz.
