Explore and Create at Westport’s Mini Maker Faire

WESTPORT, Conn. – Anyone who’s ever wondered how things are made or work can feed their curiosity, and creativity, at the Westport Mini Maker Faire this Saturday. More than 50 hobbyists, scientists, students, artists and other creators will showcase and explain something they’ve made.

Explore an 8-foot-long, 2,300-pound submarine created by a local inventor, learn the secrets behind weather balloon technology, get up close and personal with robots, watch a pottery demonstration or see how human gestures and body movements are translated into sounds and images by a Body Sound Suit.

The event — the first official maker faire in Connecticut — will also feature plenty of hands-on activities. Attendees can try their hand at making non-electrical instruments during the Battle of the Homemade Bands competition. Faire-goers can also participate in the Rube Goldberg Experiment, in which teams of up to five people will be challenged to create a machine that performs a simple task, like cracking an egg. Registration is required for both these events.

The faire is produced by CLASP Homes, a Westport-based nonprofit that serves people with developmental disabilities, and the Westport Library. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both inside and outside the library. Anyone not able to register for free tickets online may do so in person at the faire.
