Edythe Hindle, 93, Westport Volunteer

WESTPORT, Conn. – Edythe May Cawthra Hindle, a 50-year resident of Westport, died April 12. She was 93.

Born Nov. 7, 1918, in Bridgeport to the late William and Florie Cawthra, Hindle attended schools in Stratford. She graduated as valedictorian and best musician of her high school class in 1936. She was also a member of Cenex Cum Laude Honor Society, president of orchestra and secretary of the French Club. Hindle attended Booth and Bayliss Business School in Bridgeport and Fairfield University.

She made her home for more than 50 years in Westport, during which time she was an active member of Christ and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Hindle was employed by Boots Aircraft, Inc., and then Stauffer Chemical Company in Westport from 1971 to 1983, retiring as a senior executive secretary.

Hindle was active in the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, PTA boards, the Performing Arts Committee of Staples High School, The Nature Center, the Star Organization, helping adults with disabilities, fundraising for the Red Cross, YMCA, United Fund. She was a member of the Eastern Star and served as secretary of the United Fund board of directors from 1967 to 1971 and 1978 to 1981.

An excellent homemaker, cook and seamstress, Hindle enjoyed dancing and bowling and found peace in gardening and swimming at Compo Beach.

She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Thomas Hindle, and a brother, Harold Cawthra. She is survived by a son, Thomas Frederick Hindle, of Westport; a daughter, Barbara May Hindle, of Fortine, Mont.; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, three nieces and several cousins.

Calling hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the chapel of Christ and Holy Trinity Church in Westport. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. on Wednesday in the church sanctuary. Family and friends are invited to gather in the church reception hall following the service. Burial will follow at the Nichols Farm Burial Ground in Nichols, Conn.
