EASTON, Conn. The people at the Easton Senior Center use their real-world experiences to give Catherine O'Connell advice and tell her stories.
"The best advice I've gotten is to make the most out of everything that you can while you can and take advantage of all opportunities that come your way," said Catherine, who works as an assistant at the senior center.
She started as a volunteer there two years ago. In the fall, Catherine will be a senior at Providence College, where she studies humanities, business and Spanish. At the senior center, Catherine works with the director, Val Buckley, who mentors her on how to successfully run a facility.
One of Catherine's favorite memories is working at the clothing sale . "The seniors keep an eye out for me and people would say, 'Oh, this would look cute on you.' I like the community and that they are always thinking of you," said Catherine.
A group of Easton's middle school and high school students volunteer at the senior center each week, sorting DVDs and books, helping seniors with projects and offering computer lessons. Volunteers come from the National Charity League, the Boy Scouts of America and the Mothers and Daughters.
Some of the center's most frequent volunteers include Timothy Klufas, John O'Connell, Christoph Dow, Gabby Shkreli, John Shkreli and Stephanie Dee.
The senior center is always looking for more volunteers. Those interested can call 203-268-1145.
