Katie Morrison of Westport is taking Labor Day as one last opportunity to get away before the sun sets on summer. And she isn't letting the threat of bad weather hamper her plans.
"We're going to head to [Martha's] Vineyard until Monday, hopefully," Katie said.
But a weekend trip to the Vineyard with her husband and younger son will actually be the second stop on her list. The first stop will be to Boston College, where oldest son Dan, 20, is starting his junior year Tuesday.
"We plan to get an early start Friday, stay the night in Boston, and get to the Vineyard sometime on Saturday," she said.
Dan will spend much of his weekend settling into his new off-campus digs.
"They're going to drop me off and help me move in," he said.
But beyond the move-in and gearing up for school, Dan will enjoy time with his mom and family before they leave for the Vineyard.
If the weather gets ugly and they don't go to the Vineyard, Katie said the family will probably stay in Boston.
Like Katie, Wilton resident Alicia Sullivan's plans include an out-of-state trip, but to New York City.
"It's my friend's birthday, so me and a few of our friends are going to the city on Saturday," said Alicia, 23. "We'll probably just go out to dinner, then visit a couple different bars."
But her weekend fun doesn't stop there. On Monday, Alicia will host a holiday BBQ with friends, weather permitting.
According to AAA Southern New England , Katie and Alicia will be among an estimated 34.4 million Americans traveling more than 50 miles from home this weekend.
