Regular readers of Sports Illustrated and fans of baseball writing should mark their calendars for Nov. 16. Westport's Frank Deford will be at the Fairfield Museum and History Center starting at 7 p.m. next Tuesday to discuss his books on baseball, including "The Old Ball Game: How John McGraw, Christy Mathewson, and the New York Giants Created Modern Baseball," and his newest, a novel called "Bliss Remembered."
Often cited as one of the country's best sports writers, Deford is a regular broadcast correspondent on "RealSports with Bryant Gumbel" and a senior contributing writer at Sports Illustrated magazine. He has been elected to the Hall of Fame of the National Association of Sportscasters and Sportswriters and was voted U.S. Sportswriter of the Year six times. Deford also earned the Magazine Writer of the Year award from the Washington Journalism Review twice, as well as an Emmy and a George Foster Peabody Award.
Deford's talk is another baseball-themed event at the museum in honor of its ongoing exhibit, "It's a Hit! A Hometown View of Our National Pastime." The museum staff suggests that all who plan to attend preregister . The fee is $5 for members and $8 for nonmembers.
