Joseph Waldron still recalls his first visit to West Point four years ago.
“I was beginning to see myself adopting a military career. West Point quickly became the focus of my goal," he said in a statement. "I dedicated myself to activities and coursework that would prepare me for a military career.
U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty (D-5th District) awarded Waldron with a congressional nomination for West Point. A congressional nomination is required for – but does not guarantee – admission.
“Applying to West Point is a difficult thing, and with difficult things there are no guarantees," Waldron said. "This appointment is a testament to the help and support of many from my community, and that is extremely valuable to me. My field force officer, specifically, guided me throughout this process. I am humbled by the opportunity and the nomination by Representative Esty. I look forward to being a West Point Cadet and ultimately an Army Officer.”
His background as a cadet commander made Waldron an excellent candidate for West Point.
"He had visions of one day enrolling at West Point, and committed himself to taking the necessary steps and actions to secure both a Congressional nomination and admittance to the academy," Esty's office said in a statement.
"Joseph has been previously honored with a number of awards that signify his strength and tenacity," the statement said.
Those awards include the Billy Mitchell Award Civil Air Patrol, the Commanders Commendation Award at the Civil Air Patrol Western Group Banquet, the Connecticut Congressional Award at the Civil Air Patrol Western Group Banquet Deputy Commander of 37 Cadets, the Air Force Association Cadet Aerospace Education Officer of the Year Award (Northeast Region); and the Air Force Association Squadron Cadet of the Year Award.
In addition to his commendations, he is also a Color Guard Member and Hawk Mountain Ranger Third Class.
Two other students nominated by Esty were also admitted to West Point: George Pavlakis of Avon and Ryan Witter of Unionville.
“For the past 215 years, West Point has produced some of our country’s finest young men and women who have gone on to do great things," Esty said. "I have no doubt that these young men’s aptitude, tenacity, incredible work ethic, and devotion to our country will serve them well as they pursue their careers in military service."
