Cuba Expert To Address Y's Men Of Westport/Weston On U.S. Relations

WESTPORT, Conn. -- Julia Sweig, a former senior fellow for Latin America Studies and director for Latin America Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, will be the Y’s Men of Westport/Weston’s featured speaker at its April 30 meeting.

Sweig will speak on the very timely topic of Cuba and U.S.-Cuban relations in a talk on "Cuba and the U.S.: Cracks in the Facade."  

The meeting will be at the Unitarian Church, 10 Lyons Plains Road, Westport.

Coffee and doughnuts start at 9:45 a.m. with Sweig’s talk at 10:30 a.m. 

Sweig has a bachelor's degree from the University of California and a master's and doctorate degrees from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. She spent nearly 16 years with the Council on Foreign Relations, where she established a reputation as an eminent scholar of international relations in the Americas.

She is the author of "Cuba: What Everyone Needs to Know" (2009, 2013), and "Friendly Fire: Losing Friends and Making Enemies in the Anti-American Century" (2006), as well as numerous publications on Latin America and American foreign policy.

Her book, "Inside the Cuban Revolution: Fidel Castro and the Urban Underground" (2002) received the American Historical Association’s Herbert Feis Ward for best book of the year by an independent scholar.

Earlier this year, Sweig joined the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas as a Senior Research Fellow.
