Santa Claus is coming to Westport next weekend, but not to make early deliveries. Instead, he and Mrs. Claus will attend the Saugatuck Church Christmas Festival having their pictures taken with children.
The churchs second annual holiday fest will also feature crafts by local vendors, a vintage Christmas Boutique, a bake sale and a raffle of themed gift baskets and mini Christmas trees. There will also be games, a wreath sale, and a performance of holiday music by the Jazz Guild of Fairfield County .
"The Saugatuck Church Christmas Festival promises fun for everyone and gives everyone a chance to contribute to an important cause right here at home," church Vice Moderator Michele Coppola Ames said in a release.
It will be held Saturday, Dec. 4, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church . Proceeds from the event will benefit the church's 40th annual Christmas Feast, a community meal that is open to all on Christmas Day.
"Although many items needed [for the feast] are donated by the generosity of our community partners, many more items need to be purchased, and each year the need continues to grow," said Mary Ann West, a communications spokesperson for the church.
Like the annual Thanksgiving Feast, the Christmas Feast is held at the church and feeds hundreds of people from all walks of life, including the homeless and those who simply want to share a meal with others, Coppola Ames said.
Last year, more than 100 volunteers helped prepare and serve 200 meals, Coppola Ames said, adding that Saugatuck Congregational is "the only church in the area to offer such a meal on Christmas Day."
"The feast is truly amazing to witness," she said. "Volunteers come from all over Fairfield, New Haven and Westchester counties to assist in the endeavor. Many have been coming for decades and can't imagine Christmas without the feast."
