Easton eighth-grader Eddie Thiede will join the Easton Community Center's Community Leadership Club for the third year in a row this summer.
"A lot of my friends do it. [Community service] helps the community and it helps us become better people," said Eddie.
The Community Leadership Club is a camp for kids ages 11 to 15. It teaches them ownership and leadership skills, said Billy Barrett, youth and teen director at the Easton Community Center.
There are six one-week sessions, and kids can attend more than one session. On Mondays, there are team building exercises and planning for Thursday's community service and field day. On Tuesday, campers take a local field trip, and on Wednesdays everyone goes to the beach in Fairfield. On Fridays, the campers are rewarded with a bigger trip, to places like Six Flags, the Bronx Zoo or the CoCo Key Water Resort.
Community service projects on Thursdays will include landscaping for the town of Bridgeport, projects at the Beardsley Zoo, cooking for a shelter, a sponsored car wash and a trip to the Jewish Home for the Elderly. Eddie remembers helping out at Sherwood Farm in Easton by planting corn.
The camp is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, with some trips ending later in the day. Each week is $325 per camper. If a camper signs up for four or more weeks, it is $300 per week. The camp will run from June 27 through August 5. Each week will have a different theme, such as Leaders of the Lost Park with a trip to Brownstone Exploration and Discovery Park, Safari Survival Week with a trip to Club Getaway and the Bronx Zoo, and Rock 'n' Rollercoaster Carnival Week with a trip to Madame Tussauds Wax Museum and Six Flags.
