BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- After a Bridgeport barber was shot and killed in his shop on Saturday while protecting his customers from an armed assailant who had run in, community members have set up a fund to help his family.
Deon Rodney, 32, died after being shot at Just Right Cutz barbershop on Park Avenue Saturday evening, according to police. Two men had gotten into an altercation, and Rodney sprang into action to protect his customers, including a young boy whose hair he had just finished cutting.
Rodney leaves behind an 8-year-old daughter, a wife, and his mother. Coworkers of his wife Kimone Waite have set up a GoFundMe campaign to help assist with the funeral costs for Rodney. Any funds remaining after the funeral costs will be placed into a trust fund for Rodney's daughter.
In the first 22 hours of the campaign, nearly $3,000 of the $30,000 goal had been raised.
