Will Davies sank 73 of 100 free throws in Mondays Free Throws for Juarez competition at Weston High School. The 12-year-old made 40 of his first 50 attempts.
I thought Id make somewhere between 50 and 60, Davies said. To make 73 is really good. When I shot the first 50, I felt like I was in a pretty good zone.
Davies plays basketball and soccer for Weston travel teams. He tuned up for the competition by practicing at home. I wanted to do it because its for a good cause, and its my favorite sport, Davies said.
The free throw competition was organized by Weston High grad Michael Evans. He founded Full Court Peace , an organization dedicated to curbing rising violence in Latin America. The non-profit focuses especially on Ciudad Juarez in Mexico, where 15,000 people have died in gang-related violence since 2006. FCP is working with local groups to develop after-school basketball clubs to help stop the violence.
Brian Cast also had a hot hand from the foul line earlier in the event. He made 86 free throws and raised $5,000 for the cause.
