Blog Keeps Other Moms in the Know

When Catherine Revzon moved to Weston from New York City with her family a year and a half ago, she was in a whole new world. She did not know many people in town and she found herself searching the Internet for things to do on the weekends with her husband, Jason, and their two young children, Winston, 2, and Maddy, 4.

The former pharmacist turned stay-at-home mom had experience writing a pharmaceutical blog geared toward mothers with children and she wanted to put these skills to a new use. She decided to combine the information she had collected from her research about life in Weston and make it accessible to other mothers who were having similar troubles finding things to do in town. Her solution? She created the Mom’s in Weston, CT blog.

“There are a lot of moms like me who moved from the city and don’t know what to do,” said Revzon, whose children were sitting quietly nearby looking at picture books at the Weston library. “I wanted to share things my family does with others.”

The blog features family oriented events in town, kid-friendly recipes, coupons, reviews on toys, books and kid-friendly restaurants in the area.  The by moms, for moms site is run by Revzon, but people all over town are contributing. Together, she and other parents organized a Halloween parade and mock trick-or-treat at Bisceglie-Scribner Park. The volunteers were stationed throughout the park handing candy to the children that attended.

Those involved with the site arrange playgroups, beach outings and picnics at Compo Beach and monthly dinners at local restaurants to talk and share information. Revzon said whenever anyone comes across new websites or recipes that are helpful, she adds it to her blog so that others can enjoy the information.

According to Revzon, there are 24 e-mail subscribers to her blog, but that is not the only way she keeps in touch. Her Facebook group has 29 members and growing and her Facebook fan page has an additional 15 subscribers. She even tweets messages on Twitter while she is at an event she thinks others would enjoy.

With Winston and Maddy by her side all day, Revzon must balance her blogging with being a mom, something she said is made easier with her iPhone. She blogs mostly using Wordpress, which is an application that she can download to her phone. “Having the right technology makes it manageable,” she said, as Maddy returned to her side carrying a pile of movies she wanted to check out.

Revzon said she wants to make parents realize they are not alone. “I strive to connect Westonites,” she said. “I want to meet other moms and at the same time I want them to realize—‘hey, you’re just down the block.’”
