Available vaccines will be injectable for those age 3 and older, live nasal mist for those who are healthy and ages 2 to 49 and high dose for those 65 and older.

The injectable and nasal mist vaccines are quadrivalent. This means they contain four strains – two influenza A and two influenza B. The high dose is only available in trivalent, or containing three strains, but has been proven to increase antibody production, which makes it stronger at preventing the flu.

Studies have shown that the nasal spray works better for children ages 2 to 8. However, none of the vaccines is better than the others at preventing influenza illnesses, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Getting your annual flu shot is the best way to protect yourself from getting sick from the flu virus and prevent spreading it to others,” said Mark Cooper, director of health.
