Westport Mom Thinks 'Inside The Box' With New Party Business

WESTPORT, Conn. – After being invited to three children’s house-bounce birthday parties three weekends in a row, Sarah Rose and her sons were tired of the same-old, same-old.

The recent U.K. transplant to Westport wondered whether there was something different she could offer for her own children’s parties – something that would fall between requiring a full-blown party planner and a quick trip to Party City for various tchotchkes.

“I wanted to offer a different kind of party,” said Rose.

Within two months, after querying friends and sending out marketing surveys on local Facebook groups, Rose solidified her idea for Rosebud Boxes and launched her party-in-a-box business in September.

With five party themes – Enchanted Forest, High Tea, Bohemian Dream, Happy Campers and Jungle Safari – Rose provides the decorations, tableware, games, costumes and goody bags for a special party for children ages 3 to 10.

All that's required: imagination from the party-goers, and cake and snacks from the hosts. Rose will also work with parents to customize a party. And for an additional fee, she provides extra play pieces (large props) and will come and set up the party. Once done, parents toss everything back into the box and Rose picks it up for the next event.

“I wanted to get people away from the mindset that hosting children’s parties at home is hard work,” she said.

“With Rosebud Boxes it's all done for you, so you can focus on the children themselves. And then at the end you can pop it all back in the box and I'll sort it out!”

The Enchanted Forest theme, featuring fairy tutus and pin-the-wing-on-the-fairy (among other games) has been the most popular. Her personal favorite, however, is the High Tea theme.

“I love all that china,” she said. “It’s really lovely. I can’t walk past the Curio Cottage [Thrift Store in Westport] without going in and buying cups and saucers.”

Rose has been pleased with the local response to her business thus far.

“I can’t think of a better area to launch it in,” she said. “People are open to ideas here and I’ve been really supported by the community.”

In the future, she hopes to branch out to bachelorette parties and baby showers.
