The new list — available online or in print form at Fairfield libraries, supermarkets and other locations — includes senior deals on everything from appliances to restaurants to pet stores.
“I think this is a fabulous kind of statement on how our community values our seniors,” said First Selectman Michael Tetreau, noting knowing about the discounts makes shopping in Fairfield more cost effective.
“Discount Programs & Services for Seniors” was a long time coming and involved substantial leg work from a dedicated group of volunteers, who went door to door in the town’s business districts, asking about discounts.
Nora Cooper, the project leader, said she got the idea when she stopped in at a store that offered a 20 percent senior discount every Wednesday.
“I thought, ‘Wow, I wonder how many others offer the same thing,’” she said.
It turns out quite a few do, and others were willing to create a discount once they heard about the brochure idea.
Cathy Rotanz, volunteer coordinator for the Bigelow Center for Senior Activities, said the volunteers unearthed a slew of offers that senior can enjoy across town.
“They went with a vengeance,” she said.
For instance, seniors are entitled to a full 20 percent discount anytime at CompuPro, Staples and Jayne’s Haircare, according to the brochure. Dunkin' Donuts offers a free doughnut with a large coffee anytime and Core Motion Studio offers 10 percent off class packages.
Some of the businesses require an ID or have specific age restrictions — 62 and up, 65 and up — but Human Services Director Terry Giegengack said it never hurts to ask.
“I would like to encourage local businesses” to offer discounts, she said. “It’s a great partnership.”
Noting the senior population is one of the fastest-growing demographics and a vibrant consumer group, Economic Development Director Mark Barnhart said the list is a good marketing tool for local business.
The brochures a joint effort by the Bigelow Center, the town, Economic Development and the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce, will be available wherever the Bigelow Center’s newsletter is found. Giegengack said it will be continuously updated online.
