The 5-day forecast from Pollen.com predicts levels of 9.7 or higher through Sunday. Any number above 9.7 is considered high, according to Pollen.com. The worst day for elevated pollen count is expected to be Saturday, when the forecast predicts pollen levels to reach 10.9. Friday and Sunday are also expected to have unusually high pollen levels, with ratings of 10.0 and 10.6, respectively.

The rise in the pollen count coincides with the rise in temperatures in the region. Temps will hit 80 or higher every day into early next week, according to forecasts.

The annual average level in May for Norwalk is 9.5. This month has been slightly lower than normal, because of cooler temperatures and rain. The highest index number this month in Norwalk so far was 10.3 on May 9. Pollen from oak, maple and birch trees are the top contributors to elevated pollen counts.

Some reminders to help deal with allergy distress include keeping windows closed in your home and car, setting air conditioners to re-circulate in your home and vehicle, and limiting outdoor exposure between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. when pollen counts are highest. According to Dr. Mark Wasserman, medical director at AFC Doctors Express Norwalk, “It is also helpful to use an air purifier with a HEPA filter in the rooms where you spend a lot of time."
