Pick Your Own Apples, Veggies At Easton Farms

EASTON, Conn. -- You can go to the grocery store to buy farm fresh produce or, if you live in Easton, you can pick it yourself.

Eighteen varieties of apples and a variety of vegetables can be picked at two Easton farms.

Silverman’s Farm on Sport Hill Road is the town’s apple farm, where a variety of red and green apples are available. Red and Golden Delicious, Macintosh and Macoun apples currently are being picked with more to come.

“Every apple has its own window with varieties available during different parts of September and October,” said the farm’s owner, Ben Silverman.

He projects the season may end in mid-October, “because the season started early due to the warm spring,” he said. Apples are usually picked until the end of October.

Josh Barber, from the Bronx, recently picked apples with his family.

“There’s a load of apples on every tree and they’re easy to pick because the trees are about six-feet tall so the apples are at eye level,” he said.

Customers buy peck and half bushel bags before they pick and are driven out to the orchards by farm hands.

Candee Farm, on Morehouse Road, specializes in vegetables, with pick-your-own tomatoes, eggplant, Hungarian and bell peppers, green and yellow squash and cucumbers available.

Fred Candee, who has operated the 55-acre farm for 30 years, said the produce that is picked is sold by the pound.
