Owners Urged To Vaccinate Their Pets After Dogs Get Sick In Easton, Monroe

EASTON, Conn. -- A bacterial infection that can be prevented by vaccinations has infected dogs in Easton and Monroe, according to the Easton Courier.

Easton Animal Control warns that a disease called leptospirosis has infected a few dogs in Easton and Monroe recently, according to the Easton Courier.

Easton Animal Control officials are warning residents to get their dogs vaccinated for leptospirosis, also known as lepto, the Easton Courier reported. The disease can be spread through the urine of infected animals such as raccoons, with no direct contact needed. It can infect dogs while they are running around outside, as well as humans who get close to infected pets or walk around outside with bare feet.

The Easton Courier reported that one dog passed away from the disease, and there have been a number of cases reported in Easton and Monroe. The disease is treatable, but without treatment it can lead to kidney damage, liver failure, respiratory distress and death, the Easton Courier reported.

You can take steps to prevent leptospirosis by taking care of rodent problems and getting pets vaccinated, according to the Easton Courier.
