Oh, Baby! New Goats Born At Bridgeport's Beardsley Zoo

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. --  Talk about making an entrance! On Columbus Day weekend, Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo experienced a Nigerian Dwarf goat baby boom with three babies born on Friday, Oct. 10, and three more on Sunday, Oct. 12.

The two proud moms are 4-and-half-year-old, Cupcake, who welcomed one female and two male kids. Peaches gave birth to one male and two females. Rodney, 2-and-a-half, is the dad.

The baby goats, known as kids, are all healthy and happy and welcome additions to the goat yard. This is the third set of little ones for both moms.

According to Gregg Dancho, zoo director, these kids are high energy and were bouncing around the farmyard within hours of their birth.

"Visitors coming this month will enjoy seeing them play and jump around having fun," he said.

The kids -- unnamed as of yet -- will begin to nibble on hay and grains soon and spend the next few months nursing.

For those who are unfamiliar with Nigerian Dwarf goats, they are miniature dairy goats known for producing milk with a higher butterfat content than their larger counterparts. A doe (grown female) can produce up to 2 quarts of sweet milk a day.

Beardsley Zoo, at 1875 Noble Ave., is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Adult admission (ages 12 and older) is $14, children (ages 3 -11) and senior admission (62 and older) is $10; children under three are free. Phone is 203-394-6565.
