WESTPORT, Conn. – The “Sing For Your Shakespeare” show at the Westport Country Playhouse is receiving praise from The New York Times.

In her review published in the Times, Anita Gates, called it a “high-concept music revue.”

The show features performances of 20th-century songs written for musicals inspired by Shakespeare’s plays. These musicals include “Kiss Me Kate” and “West Side Story.” The audience is also treated to Shakespeare’s own words set to music.

Gates highlighted Karen Arker for her songs by Cole Porter and Stephen Sondheim as well as her rendition of “Falling in Love with Love,” from the musical “The Boys from Syracuse.” She expressed being “charmed” by Britney Coleman’s performance of  “Sonnet to Hank Cinq,” which is Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s version of Shakespeare’s 40th Sonnet.

Gates also credited Director Mark Lamos for guiding his cast “expertly through constant mood changes” and for adding “splashes of humor in unexpected places.”
