New York Times Praises Westport Playhouse's 'A Song At Twilight'

WESTPORT, Conn. -- The upcoming Westport Country Playhouse production of "A Song at Twilight" is garnering critical praise.

The New York Times noted several positives in the Noël Coward production in a recent review. Performances of "A Song at Twilight" begin with preview performances from April 29 to May 2 and opening night on May 3. The show, written by Noël Coward and directed by Mark Lamos, is part of a co-production with Hartford Stage.

"Mr. Coward called it his most serious play, and it certainly cuts through the familiar, waggish Coward persona to reveal a semblance of real heartbreak underneath," said New York Times critic Sylviane Gold in the review. "Currently at Hartford Stage in a stylish coproduction with Westport Country Playhouse, where it opens next month, it is both a period piece and a topical inquiry into just how much honesty an artist owes his public, his intimates and himself."

Gold notes that the "repartee doesn't come close to matching Mr. Coward's best, and even at 90 intermission-less minutes, the play seems somewhat long."

"It’s not because the director, Mark Lamos, and his team aren’t trying," Gold said in the review. "The three stars are strong performers, well-suited to their roles."
