WESTPORT, Conn. -- Saugatuck Rowing Club is gearing up to take on childrens’ fitness in the new year.

Beginning in January, the club will offer an 8-week, hour-long Fit Kids program to introduce children ages 12-14 to methods and benefits of fitness. Children can take classes on either Saturday or Sunday, or both weekend days.

“There’s a need in the community for a middle-age program,’’ said Allison Galloway, the Fitness Director at Saugatuck. “We want to improve all aspects of fitness and nutrition for middle school aged kids. I think it’s something that’s been missing in the community.”

The program will focus on cardiovascular exercise, flexibility, speed, agility and power. Galloway says the program will be a terrific addition to children who already play sports, and will also increase self-esteem and help team building.

“Our junior programs are so well-developed that I would expect we’ll have terrific feedback,’’ Galloway said.

Part of the challenge for Galloway will be to get students to continue their fitness and nutrition development during the time they are not in class. “Kids are not sleeping enough, they’re eating poorly and it’s a lot to manage because they all have busy schedules,’’ Galloway said. “We’re going to help them put all the pieces together.”

For more information about the Fit Kids program, contact Galloway at 203-221-7475 or via email atagalloway@saugatuckrowing.com.
