WESTPORT, Conn. Most Westporters will talk your ear off about the many wonderful things their town has to offer, from Compo Beach to downtown shopping to first rate restaurants.
But Cockenoe Island? Its a safe bet that most residents have never set foot on it.
Now is your chance. On Saturday, Aug. 18, you can discover this underappreciated natural beauty just off the Westport coast by joining the Kayak Tour to Historic Cockenoe Island tour. Organized by the Westport Historical Society, this kayak tour will be led by author, local nature expert and avid kayaker David Park.
The tour launches from Longshore Sailing School and lands on Cockenoe Island, where kayakers will walk the island and join a discussion on water quality, wildlife and preservation efforts. Kayakers of intermediate and higher levels are welcome. Cost for Westport Historical Society members is $18. Nonmembers pay $20.
The tour is offered in conjunction with the societys current exhibit, The Sound and the Saugatuck, which runs through Sept. 1.
