WESTPORT, Conn. -- Westport’s downtown has become a center for fashion in Fairfield County. On Saturday, the French boutique Cotélac will add another stop on your list of shopping destinations.
Since 1993, Cotélac has become an established brand throughout much of France. And now Catherine Groener is working hard to establish locations throughout the United States.
Since her move from France to the U.S., Groener has successfully opened Cotelac boutiques in New York City, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco. Westport’s location, which will add to more than 120 locations worldwide, is the first in Connecticut.
“Cotélac isn’t sold in any department stores,” Groener said. “Since it’s not a recognized label [in the US], our client is a woman who is more of a free spirit… a woman who doesn’t need ‘Prada’ written on their bag.”
Groener described Cotélac’s designer as a free spirit herself, interested in music and art more than in mainstream trends and fashions. In fact, Cotélac looks to foster new artists’ careers by giving away samples of their work -- such as a new CD -- with each item they sell at their storefronts.
And, while Groener nor the designer at Cotélac have a problem with mainstream fashion -- in fact, Groener praises it -- their brand looks to accentuate beauty in a less than ordinary way.
“When you buy something from Cotélac it has to fit not just on your body, but with your way of life as well,” Groener added.
The new French retailer will be opening it’s doors for a soft opening this weekend at 111 Post Road E. next to Urban Outfitters.
The location is a familiar one for Groener, who until 2007, owned Little Feet and Be Bop in the same storefront. She added that she is excited to open this location and offer something new to her old but familiar clients.
Although Cotélac also offers clothing for men, given the size of the Westport storefront, Cotélac will provide only women’s apparel at this location.
Hours on Saturday will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
