Dubbed “The Best Book Sale in New England,” the Southport library’s sale draws book dealers looking for rare finds as well as voracious readers picking up a novel or two for the beach.

The sale occurs under large tents on the library’s Great Lawn, in the parking lot, auditorium, reading room and Rennell Room. Admission is free, and all proceeds help pay for the more than 750 programs and events held at the library each year. Go here for daily hours and pricing.

This year’s offerings should be of special interest to music lovers, as the sale will boast hundreds of high-quality jazz CDs and a sizable selection of post-World War II sheet music that should draw the eye of musicians and collage artists alike.

Art lovers might want to snap up the large, original pastel drawings by American painter and author Bernhard August “Hardie” Gramatky Jr., who wrote and illustrated several children’s books, including “Little Toot.”

Arrive early to see the first edition books by favorite authors, including J.D. Salinger of “The Catcher in the Rye” fame and Gabriel Garcia Márquez, the Colombian author best known for “Love in the Time of Cholera” and “One Hundred Years of Solitude.”

Parents will find a large selection of contemporary children’s books and the 56th sale features a group of high-quality photography magazines.

The sale boasts 60 categories from biography and cookbooks to fiction and “exotica.” New this year is an eclectic print and art sale featuring a collection of 1,700 prints, original photographs and art. That sale is from July 22-24.

There also will be a "Specials Online Catalog" available at pequotlibrary.org. Buyers have an opportunity to purchase two “specials” in advance of the sale at a premium of 25 percent above the catalog price. Viewing items is by appointment only.
