According to AAA Northeast, 2.1 million New Englanders are expected to travel for the holiday, with 1.8 million hitting the road between July 1-5. Nationwide, nearly 42 million people are expected to take a holiday trip, a 0.7 percent increase compared to 2014.

Although Independence Day gas prices are expected to be the lowest in at least five years, travelers should expect higher rates for airfare and lodging, AAA said.

According to AAA's Leisure Travel Index, the average stay at a Two Diamond Hotel is 6 percent higher than in 2014 and 9 percent for a Three Diamond. Airfares for the top 40 domestic flight routes are also an average of 6 percent higher this year.
