WESTPORT, Conn. -- Matt Davies, a Staples High School graduate and Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist at Newsday, will be the Y’s Men of Westport/Weston’s featured speaker at its meeting Thursday, April 9, at the Unitarian Church in Westport at 10 Lyons Plains Road.
Davies will talk on the art and practicalities of his craft, shaping his commentary to the local environment and survival of the editorial cartoonist in an age of decline and transformation for newspapers. Coffee and doughnuts will be served at 9:45 a.m., and Davies’ talk starts at 10:30 a.m.
After graduating from Staples High School, Davies studied at the Savannah College of Arts & Design in Georgia and the School of Visual Arts in New York. He worked for The Journal News in White Plains, N.Y., the Hearst Connecticut Newspaper Group and the nonprofit online policy journal remappingdebate.org before joining Newsday in 2014.
Davies won a Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning and a Herblock Prize in 2004, was a 2011 Pulitzer Prize finalist and has won numerous other awards for his cartoons. His work appears widely in newspapers and magazines. His first children’s book, "Ben Rides On" (2013), earned enthusiastic critical support, and his second is due out soon.
