WESTPORT, Conn. -- The Conservative Synagogue in Westport is set to host Jack Wertheimer, professor of American Jewish history at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City.

Wertheimer will take part in a discussion about a recent Pew Research Center Study on American Jews at 5 p.m. Dec. 15. The Conservative Synagogue is at 30 Hillspoint Road in Westport.

The study concluded that Jewish people in the United States overwhelmingly said "they are proud to be Jewish and have a strong sense of belonging to the Jewish people. However the survey also suggests a shift in Jewish identity. One in five Jews, or 22 percent, now describe themselves as having no religion," according to the study.

Wertheimer specializes in modern Jewish history, representatives said.

“The Pew study of America's Jews offers us a valuable diagnostic instrument to evaluate how we are doing as a community," he said. "This lecture will examine the good news, the bad news and the implications as we go forward."

Wertheimer's particular focus concerns religious, education, and organizational sectors of America Jewish life since World War II.

Rabbi Jeremy Wiederhorn of The Conservative Synagogue of Westport said the study did show positive trends.

"While the results of the Pew Study unveiled many concerning demographic trends, I think that it also provides the opportunity for communal discussion on ways in which we can reinvigorate American Jewish life moving forward,” Wiederhorn said. “We are thrilled to host Professor Wertheimer for this important conversation."

The Conservative Synagogue of Westport, the UJA/ Federation WWWN, Temple Israel and Congregation Beth El are co-sponsoring the event, which is free and open to the public.
